Scottish Education Award winners for 2009 in the Ambition category

The school has recently had a new athletics centre, The George Duncan Arena [2], built within its grounds, and this is available for public use outwith school hours. This facility has greatly enhanced the existing indoor games halls ensuring that sport is at the core of the schools development.

Recently it has been granted 'Sports Comprehensive' status by the local authority in partnership with its neighbouring school St Johns Academy High School. Both schools work very closely together to further opportunities for all pupils and have been at the forefront of anti sectarian work running a joint S5/6 PE based curriculum every Friday afternoon. This ground-breaking work has been recognised by the HMIe and Learning & Teaching Scotland. The school also has its own Charitable Sports Trust which is supported by many including fundamentalist Christian Mr Brian Souter and the Perth Guildry. The hard work has left them with an award from the Scottish Sports Awards. Levels of attainment and achievement are rising steadily in the school led by many very strong departments with progressively more emphasis on success and ambition. The school has recently won an ECO Green Flag and places a strong emphasis on developing pupil leadership. Within that context the pupils have raised more than £22000 for various charities over the last two years. Other areas of innovation include school based courses in construction, hairdressing, horticulture and child care. These courses complement the existing strong academic curriculum.
